Abstract
Previous researches regarding to the effect of driving behavior on the exhaust emissions reported in many different units. Especially, the emission tests of a diesel truck on a chassis dynamometer were reported in term of gram per kilometer (g/km). Therefore, the amount of the emissions varied with the time duration which cannot be brought to any further analysis. This research carried the detail of the standard driving cycle of the Pollution Control Department (PCD) to predict the engine speed and driving condition. This was to study the effects on the exhaust gas emissions and the application of using a chassis dynamometer instead of an engine dynamometer which can reduce the testing cost. The results showed that the emission level order among Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 depended on the unit. However, comparing to the same steady state driving pattern in different vehicle speeds, driving at higher speed produced higher exhaust emissions. Moreover, it was found that the emissions were particularly high during the gear shifting. Using the inappropriate gear ratio was also another source of high emissions. The advantage of the methodology used in this investigation was that it can show the variations of emission level from the actual driving behavior. However, the data is not enough to use this methodology instead of engine dynamometer testing.
